Whether you are a casual cyclist, a dedicated road warrior, or an adrenaline-seeking mountain biker, Bhutan provides a stunning, challenging, and deeply rewarding adventure.
Types of Biking in Bhutan
Your biking experience can be tailored to your fitness level and interests.
- Mountain Biking (MTB): This is the most popular form of biking in Bhutan. The country is crisscrossed with ancient footpaths, mule tracks, and newly developed trails. You can find everything from flowy singletrack through pine forests to technical, rocky descents. Many tours focus on trails around Thimphu, Paro, and the recently restored Trans-Bhutan Trail.
- Road Cycling: Bhutan has one main highway that winds its way from west to east. This paved road, while narrow and winding, is in good condition and sees relatively light traffic. The challenge here is not traffic, but elevation. A typical day of road cycling involves tackling at least one major mountain pass, which can mean sustained climbs of 20-50 kilometers, followed by thrilling, seemingly endless descents.
Popular Biking Routes & Regions
Most biking adventures are centered in the western and central valleys.
- Paro Valley: Often the start and end point of a trip. The valley is relatively flat (by Bhutanese standards) and perfect for acclimatization. A popular ride is to the ruins of the Drukgyel Dzong or to the base of the famous Tiger’s Nest Monastery.
- Thimphu Valley: The capital offers numerous mountain biking trails in the surrounding hills, including routes to the iconic Great Buddha Dordenma statue, which provides panoramic views of the entire valley.
- Punakha Valley: Reached via the Dochula Pass (3,150m), this sub-tropical valley offers beautiful rides through rice paddies and along the Mo Chhu and Pho Chhu rivers. The ride down from Dochula Pass to the Punakha valley is one of the world’s most spectacular descents, dropping over 1,700 meters.
- Haa Valley: A remote, pristine valley accessible via the Chele La Pass (3,988m), Bhutan’s highest motorable pass. The ride to the pass is a major challenge, but the reward is breathtaking views of the sacred Mount Jomolhari and a 1,000+ meter descent into the valley.
- Phobjikha Valley: A vast, U-shaped glacial valley known as the winter home of the rare black-necked cranes. The gentle, rolling terrain of the valley floor is ideal for a peaceful day of exploration on a mountain bike.
- Trans-Bhutan Trail: This ancient 403 km trail was recently restored and has been developed for world-class mountain biking. You can ride sections of the trail as part of a guided tour, experiencing a piece of history that was once the only way to travel across the kingdom.
