DETAILED ITINERARY

Alt: 2250m

Flying to Paro gives you one of the most spectacular mountain views in the world, especially if you are traveling from Kathmandu. Another beauty is the adventure you can feel views of the mountains, valley and villages as the flight lands in Paro. Your guide from Snow Lion Travel shall receive you at the Airport. And then drive to Thimphu. Lunch in the hotel or one of the restaurants around.

After lunch, check your cycles and ride towards the Kuenselphodrang. The ride shall be through city traffic for some time and then you shall ascent towards Kuenselphodrang and shall get good views of the Thimphu Valley. There is also a trail in the Kuenselphodrang riding through which shall be a good experience. Descent downwards till Druk School and then follow the road towards Changangkha, Motithang and via Zilukha. While in Zilukha, you shall see a good view of the Tashichhodzong. The view shall be better if it is getting dark with the lights on in Tashichhodzong. Return back to hotel and freshen up.

Today is a sightseeing day. After a leisure breakfast visit the Sangaygang view point from where you can see the view of the whole of Thimphu Valley. The place also has a lot of prayer flags fluttering and the feel of Himalayan breeze feels blessed. Then visit the Taking Preserve Center, where you can see the Takin, the national animal of Bhutan. Visit the Zorig Chusum, the institute of 13 arts and crafts. Then visit the Jungshi Handmade paper factory, where traditional Bhutanese paper is manufactured. Enjoy a typical Bhutanese lunch in the Shambala cafe. Afternoon, explore the crafts bazaar and then explore the Thimphu town for a while. In the Evening, visit the Tashichhodzong, the main administrative and monastic building in Bhutan and then visit the National Memorial Chhorten, built in the memory of the Third King of Bhutan, His Majesty the King Jigme Dorji Wangchuck. Circumambulate the chhorten and light butter lamps. This shall be an amazing Bhutanese experience. Dinner and overnight in hotel.

After breakfast, you will have an early start of today's journey for a full day ride to Punakha. After 25km of biking, you will reach Dochula Pass at an altitude of 3,140m, which offers a magnificent panoramic view of the Eastern Himalaya on a clear day. Here the impressive collection of 108 chortens sits as well.

After stopping for lunch, you will continue traveling down to the Punakha Valley which is around 40km below at an altitude of 1,372m. Upon arriving, you will head to visit the Punakha Dzong. Standing by the riverside of Pho Chu and Mo Chu, Punakha Dzong is one of the most impressive buildings and one of the top favorite attractions in Bhutan. Moreover, the rectangular shape fortress is also an honorable treasury where preserves numerous Buddhist relics and historical legacies.

 In the morning we will start riding to Chimi lhakhang, temple famously dedicated to the Buddhist saint who professed religion through drinking, singing and rampant sexual behavior. Visit temple and get blessed by the wooden phallus, allegedly carved by saint himself. Then continue the journey to Gangtey riding along the Punatsang chhu river north, crossing Khuruthang town and finally reaching the confluence of Mo chhu and Po chhu rivers between which lies magnificent Punakha Dzong, the castle which used to be the winter capital of the country. Visit the beautiful castle and it temples. Enjoy picnic style lunch. Then again ride, this time to the longest suspension bridge in Bhutan, stretching 160 meters over Mo Chhu river. Cross the bridge and follow road on other side back to confluence. Continue on the other side of the river until you reach Bajo town. See mighty Wangdue Phodrang dzong, the castle built on the strategic hill overlooking the river. It is freshly reconstructed after disastrous fire in 2012. Here, we will load our bikes to the vehicle and the rest of the way, we will drive high to the mountains, up to glacial Phobjikha valley crossing the 3350 meters high Lawa-la pass. Road is scenic and while going back, we will ride it downwards on the bikes! Reach to hotel in the late afternoon or evening.

Distance: 58 km | Alt: 1273m

 Today we will make entertaining ride around the Phobjikha valley. First we will ride till the Black Neck Crane center, where we will see interesting short documentary about these elusive birds which comes for winter roosting to the valley. Also see exhibition about them and Karma, the injured bird which lives at the center’s compound. Then we will continue ride by the road, ascending to the hill and finally reaching Gangtey village and monastery on the top. Village is very beautiful and monastery historically important. You will then ride from Phobjikha Valley to Wangdue Phodrang, covering approximately 60 km of scenic valley trails that offer gentle descents, forest paths, and river crossings. This day combines Moderate Mountain biking with cultural exploration, allowing you to enjoy the stunning landscapes while experiencing local life in small villages along the route.

Upon reaching Wangdue Phodrang, visit the historic Wangdue Phodrang Dzong and explore the local markets, where traditional handicrafts and Bhutanese goods are abundant. The ride is manageable for moderate-level cyclists, offering opportunities for photography, interaction with locals, and immersion in the serene environment of central Bhutan. You will spend the night in a medium-range hotel in Wangdue Phodrang, resting up for the next day’s longer journey.

Distance: 116km | Alt: 2050m

 You will embark on a longer mountain cycling and road adventure from Wangdue Phodrang to Paro, covering approximately 116 km over 4–5 hours, with optional biking segments along scenic stretches. The route takes you through winding mountain roads, forested hills, and picturesque valleys, offering challenging ascents and exhilarating descents for experienced riders. Along the way, you can pause to admire the natural beauty, photograph traditional villages, and soak in panoramic Himalayan views.

Upon reaching Paro, take some time to relax and explore the town’s charming streets, preparing for the next day’s iconic ride to the Tiger’s Nest Monastery. This day combines endurance biking with cultural exposure, making it a highlight of your Bhutan mountain biking journey.

You will enjoy a memorable combination of cycling and trekking in Paro. Begin with a ride of 25–30 km along scenic valley roads that lead to the base of the iconic Taktsang Monastery, also known as the Tiger’s Nest. From the base, embark on a moderate trek of 2–3 hours to reach the monastery perched dramatically on a cliff side, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and Paro Valley.

After descending, explore Paro town, visit local markets, and enjoy traditional Bhutanese cuisine at leisure. This day blends adventure, culture, and stunning scenery, providing an unforgettable experience before returning to your medium-range hotel in Paro for your final night.

Your guide will transfer you to Paro International Airport, just a short 10–15 minute drive, for your departure flight. This day provides a calm conclusion to your adventure-filled journey, allowing time to reflect on the breathtaking landscapes, cultural experiences, and thrilling mountain biking memories collected over the past week.
